The national flag of America consists of 13 horizontal red stripes that are of equal size and are alternated with white strips. In the canton is a blue rectangle that consists of 5-pointed stars that are small and white in color. A total of 50 stars are there that are arranged in 9 offset horizontal rows. Beginning with the first row, it consists of 6 stars and the alternate one consists of 5 stars. Hence, in all there are 5 rows of 6 stars and 4 of 5. These 50 stars represent 50 states and the stripes represent original 13 colonies, which rebelled against British monarchy.
There are various nicknames of this flag like Old Glory, Stars and Stripes as well as The Star-Spangled Banner. The flag is used very widely throughout the world on various clothing ornaments, lapel pins as well as badges. There is no specific symbolism that is legally defined with regards to the size or color of the American flag.
Due to a possibility of an increase in number of states, the US Army Institute of Heraldry is planning designs of flags with a possibility of accommodating up to 56 stars. The reason for this is a possible statehood in Puerto Rico, District of Columbia as well as a few other areas. There are a few other flags that resemble the US flag closely with only a few things making distinguishing factors. For example, Flag of Malaysia resembles the US flag because of a combination of red and white stripes as well as blue canton. The difference is number of strips and the crescent and a star emblem instead of 50 stars.
